Did you know? Compass is improving the way that children, youth and families access our services! Starting spring 2024, children and youth can now self-refer for free services directly through our website. We have also made things easier for community service providers, medical professionals and educators, to get support for their clients with just a few clicks of the mouse.
How to Access Services
Compass’s intake is the front door to services and supports for children and youth who need help with a mental health issue. Following the initial meeting, a Clinician will guide you through your next steps, which may involve short-term support options, ongoing services, long-term solutions, and referrals to other providers. It’s important to note, this is not a counselling service but an access point to a wide range of Compass programs including groups, therapy, and intensive services. You do not require an Ontario Health Card to access services at Compass.

Frequently Asked Questions for Access and Intake
-
I need a doctors referral to access services?
No, a doctors referral is not required to access Compass’ services. If you are a child or youth 17 or under you may refer yourself. If you are a parent or caregiver, you may refer on behalf of your child (please note that youth aged 16-17 must provide consent to services).
-
Do I need to attend the appointment with my youth?
Caregivers are often a key partner in treatment/services and should attend the intake appointment. Caregivers of young children (under 13) must attend the appointment to provide important information needed during intake. Older youth (e.g., 14-17) may attend the appointment alone, however, you are still encouraged to attend as you may have important information regarding your child/youth.
-
If my child is under 12, should they attend the appointment with me?
Intake appointments can take up to 2 hours, we strongly encourage caregivers to attend the appointment alone to ensure you can provide the focus and attention needed.

What will happen at the intake appointment?
During the intake appointment, a clinician will start a conversation with you about what has brought you to Compass. They will ask questions about your mental health, your family, and what has been going on in your life. This information helps us better understand what types of supports you need. The clinician will guide you through the next steps and explain what to expect in services. Intake is not a counselling appointment but an access point to a wide range of Compass programs including groups, therapy, and intensive services. If you’re looking for a counselling appointment consider attending mindSPACE or contacting OneStopTalk for a virtual counselling session.
