SUDBURY, Ont., – Compass is pleased to announce the successful application for a new Step Up Step Down (SUSD) Program in Sudbury. SUSD are a form of live-in-treatment programs that aim to address a critical need for intensive mental health services for youth aged 12 to 17 in Northern Ontario by bridging the gap between hospitalization and community care for youth with complex mental health needs
SUSD aims to support youth in the transition home from an inpatient hospital stay (step down), ensuring a smooth and successful reintegration into their communities. Furthermore, it provides support for those at risk of deteriorating mental health, aiming to prevent inpatient hospital admissions or readmissions (step up). The program provides short-term stabilization and intensive individualized treatment during the youth’s stay with an emphasis on youth and family recovery and skill building that will lead to a successful return home.
“Currently, Sudbury and Manitoulin does not have a live-in treatment program for youth, requiring youth to travel to Southern Ontario for services which is a significant burden for local families,” says Mark Fraser, Chief Executive Director at Compass. “With the introduction of a new Step Up Step Down program, we aim to bridge this gap and provide essential services closer to home, ensuring better access and support for youth and families.”
Funded by Ontario’s Ministry of Health, SUSD represents a significant milestone in youth mental health care in Northern Ontario. Compass is committed to delivering high-quality, accessible mental health services to youth and families in our area, promoting healing, recovery, and resilience.
With the funding announced today, Compass will be working with local communities to design and launch this new service over the coming years. Further details will be provided via social media and Compass’ website as the project progresses.
